Konecranes Uses Aircraft Technology for Pulp and Paper Applications
[ November 2, 2015 // Gary G Burrows ]Konecranes relationship with the pulp, paper and wood industries reaches back to the 1920s. Its lift trucks line has its roots in the Scandinavian timber business, but there’s nothing old school about Konecranes current fleet of lift trucks and lifting appliances customized for paper roll handling.
Konecranes unique system for handling paper rolls significantly reduces damage by computerizing and automatically regulating key operating information, technology that originated in the aircraft industry. An auto-tilt function keeps rolls in the vertical position, and the truck is prevented from moving until the roll is off the ground. The paper clamp attachment opens automatically when the roll touches the ground. The lowering motion stops simultaneously, preventing friction of the clamp on the roll. Clamp pressure, always a challenge, can be adjusted across three different levels, which is monitored and maintained to close tolerances for the type of paper being handled.
For the lifting appliance, automatic pressure sensing and reduction technology allows operators to use off-the-shelf paper clamps. Different brands and makes can be used with the same truck due to a quick-change connection system, which works for both single and double clamp handling.
“The Konecranes lifting and service offering for pulp and paper production is the most complete and technically advanced in the world,” says Phil Stevens, Konecranes North America region sales director, lift trucks. “It covers every phase of the production process, from pulp handling to warehousing. Konecranes lift trucks are an integral part of this offering.”
Konecranes lift trucks for pulp and paper handling range in capacity from 10 to 20 tons. A wide range of special lifting appliances are also available, including single and double paper roll clamps, expandable paper roll and paper bale clamps, multi-bale clamps and various fork/carriage combinations, based on a quick-change system.
