Updates for Key Oakland International Airport Runway

[ February 23, 2017   //   ]

The Port of Oakland is planning to construct the Runway 12 30 Rehabilitation Project at Oakland International Airport during the summer of 2017 and has scheduled a public outreach meeting to provide information and seek feedback on the project.
The Runway 12-30 Rehabilitation project includes an asphalt concrete overlay and upgrades to the existing lighting infrastructure for the main air carrier runway at Oakland International Airport (OAK). This runway previously received a pavement overlay in 2001 that was designed for a 15-year service life. The runway is currently due for a new overlay to provide a safe operating surface for aircraft and to maintain aviation safety standards.
Runway 12-30 is typically in service 24 hours per day. To minimize impacts to air carrier operations, staff has conducted a planning process with airlines, air carriers, the FAA, and other stakeholders to develop a preferred short-duration, full-closure option that utilizes a parallel taxiway as a temporary South Field runway to construct the runway rehabilitation project. This is consistent with the construction approach used successfully in 2001.
