POLB Bids Adieu to Pier F

As 2017 draws to a close, the Port of Long Beach and Long Beach Container Terminal say goodbye to Pier F as it was.

The last commercial ship to call at Pier F, the OOCL Tokyo, departed on Oct. 24. Operations were then shut down ahead of the fill project that’s part of Phase 3 of the $1.5 billion redevelopment project building the most advanced container terminal in North America.

The move marks the end of a 30-year era; LBCT opened the Pier F terminal in 1986. OOCL vessels are now docking exclusively at the redeveloped Pier E.

In spring 2018, construction workers will begin building the final closure dike southward from the end of Pier E. Crews will then begin finishing the fill of Slip 1.

The Pier F fill project is expected to be completed in about 18 months, and is part of the overall Middle Harbor Terminal Redevelopment Project, which is building out the new Long Beach Container Terminal. LBCT now has 176 acres of new terminal to operate, and when Middle Harbor is completed in 2020, the terminal will be more than 300 acres, with a 4,200-foot-long wharf that can handle the biggest container ships in the world.
