Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority Receives nearly $570,000 from Ohio DOT

[ October 7, 2020   //   ]

The Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority has been awarded $568,125 from the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) through the Maritime Assistance Program (MAP) for two projects at the Port of Toledo. The grant funds provide 50% of the total project costs that will be matched by local funds.

The first project is the acquisition of a Tier-4 heavy-lift forklift in the amount of $235,000, which will be utilized at the General Cargo Dock, operated by Midwest Terminals. The forklift will be used to handle steel coils and other heavy and oversized cargo regularly handled at the terminal. The remaining $333,125 will fund the construction of a retaining wall and other improvements around the dry docks at the Toledo Shipyard, operated by IRONHEAD Marine.
“The Maritime Assistance Program has been crucial in assisting the Port Authority to advance the modernization of our seaport facilities under our capital improvement plan,” said Thomas Winston, President & CEO of the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority. “Through the establishment and administration of the Program, it is clear that our partners at the Ohio Department of Transportation understand the importance of maritime commerce to the State of Ohio’s economy and intermodal transportation network.”
MAP was created by HB 166 of the 133rd General Assembly and is available to Ohio port authorities to assist with infrastructure needs. ODOT issued a Request for Applications for MAP grants earlier this summer and the Port Authority submitted applications for the projects listed above.
Earlier this year, the Port Authority received $4 million through MAP to match a federal grant of $16 million awarded by the U.S. Maritime Administration’s Port Infrastructure Development Program for the reconstruction of the dockwall and the construction of a liquid transloading facility at the General Cargo Dock. Additionally, the Port Authority also received $5.5 million in MAP funds that will be used to purchase a new mobile harbor crane.
