Descartes’ GSC Report Shows 12.4% Decline in Sept. Import Volumes

Descartes released its October Global Shipping Crisis Report, which analyzed the main economic and logistics factors pushing the global shipping crisis and the strategies to address it for the month of September.

The report’s data, collected by Descartes Datamyne – provider of the world’s largest searchable trade, import and export databases — found that economic turmoil, reduction in retail transactions, and high fuel costs are finally making an impact on U.S. container imports. In fact, September 2022 volume experienced a significant 12.4% decline. August 2022, and an 18.3% decline in China imports was a major contributing factor.

Additional highlights from the report include:

• September 2022 TEU volume decreased 11.0% versus September 2021
• Chinese imports in September were the lowest of 2022, representing 37% of the month’s volume, down 3% from August 2022 and 22.7% compared to August 2021
• Import volume at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach dropped by over 17%
• The Port of Savannah saw a significant decline of 21.5%
• East and Gulf Coast ports experienced a high amount of delays
