DOT Funds Boost Freight Infrastructure

The U.S. Department of Transportation said it will distribute more than US$728 million for 37 projects that aim to bolster the nation’s freight infrastructure.
The funds are available under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s Mega Program and the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America Grant Program.
The Mega Program, known as the National Infrastructure Project Assistance program, was established in 2021 and Congress has dedicated US$5 billion to the program over a five-year period.
INFRA is a competitive grant program to fund multimodal freight and highway projects of national or regional significance, and to improve safety, efficiency and reliability of the national freight infrastructure. The program has funded nearly US$3.1 billion, and the annual reward is about US$1.5 billion.
Project recipients, and members of the Intermodal Association of North America, are:
• America’s Green Gateway: Pier B Rail Program Buildout, Long Beach, California, for the Port of Long Beach, which is to improve on-rail service between the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.
• Florida East Coast Railway’s St. Lucie River Railroad Bridge Replacement Project, to replace a 100-year-old bridge with a new double-track structure.
• East River Berth Replacement Project, Garden City, Georgia, for the Georgia Ports Authority, to replace a port berth and two vessel berths at the Port of Brunswick’s East River Terminal.
• Louisiana International Terminal Project, St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, for the Port of New Orleans, to construct a new container terminal.
