Port Canaveral adds a new Liebher

Port Canaveral has added a second mobile harbor crane to its landside cargo operations, significantly expanding the port’s ability to handle an increasingly diverse cargo platform.
The 320-foot-tall Liebherr LHM 600 evo 6 mobile harbor crane joins the Liebherr LHM 600 evo5, which was placed into service in January 2019
The crane chassis and boom assembly along with other components arrived aboard the cargo vessel BBC Moonstone at Port Canaveral’s North Cargo Berth 5. Ambassador Services International worked with ship personnel to offload the heavy components. Assembly, testing and certification of the new crane is expected to be completed by late March.
The Canaveral Port Authority Board of Commissioners in 2022 approved the US$7.4 million investment in the crane. A US$2.8 million Florida Department of Transportation grant helped offset the cost.

The new crane bolsters our ability to handle a broad spectrum of cargo and increases our capacity to manage heavy lift operations like space components.”
Manufactured by the Liebherr Group in Germany, the LHM 600 evo 6 is a larger, more robust version of the LHM 600 evo 5 in size and capabilities. The 696-ton “evo 6” boasts 32 axles, 128 wheels, and has a lift capability of up to 154 tons and a jib length of 200 feet. Notably, its 20-container reach allows for containers to be stacked nine high on deck, compared to an 18-container reach for the evo 5.
