Port of Corpus Christi Sets Tonnage Record

[ February 21, 2024   //   ]

The Port of Corpus Christi set a new high mark for annual tonnage, topping more than 200 million tons of goods through the Corpus Christi Ship Channel for the first time in its history.
The 203 million tons moved in 2023 was an 8.1 percent increase from 2022. Growth can be attribute to a 12.5 percent jump in crude oil exports, to 126.1 million tons; a nearly 13.5 percent increase in agricultural commodities, topping 2.2 million tons; and a slight increase in refined products to 42.5 million tons. The port also handled a record volume of liquefied natural gas, 16.3 million tons.
Port customers moved 51.8 million tons through the gateway during the fourth quarter of 2023, up 4.4 percent from the same period in 2022. Leading commodities were LNG and crude oil, with the latter totaling a record 12.2 million tons in December, 10.1 percent higher than the previous record set in September 2023.
In September, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded the final contract for the Corpus Christi Ship Channel Improvement Project to Callan Marine Ltd. The first two phases are completed and the third phase is estimated for completion later this year. The final phase is slated for completion in early 2025.
The port also has several other infrastructure projects in development or under construction, including improvements to its Bulk Terminal Docks, upgrades to Cargo Dock 9, which handles breakbulk and project cargo such as wind farm components, and expansion of Oil Dock 1, which will be the first of the port’s Inner Harbor docks to accommodate the new 54-foot depth.

Bertolami Named CFO

The port of Corpus Christi has appointed Cindy Bertolami as its new chief financial officer, succeeding Kent Britton was appointed CEO in September.
As CFO, Bertolami will oversee the port’s real estate, information technology, finance, accounting, procurement and risk management departments.
In her prior role as director of finance, her duties included coordinating the completion of the port’s first annual comprehensive financial report, improving efficiencies with financial accounting processes, and serving as project manager for timekeeping and financial software transitions.
Britton said Bertolami will “not only continue the ports commitment to financial accountability and transparency, but also continue to push to improve our internal processes and systems.”
