Drewry, the maritime research consultancy, said its Global Container Port Throughput Index increased 3.3 percent month over month from May to June, improving 5.5 percent year over year to 118.5 points.
The rolling 12-month average growth rate for global port handling also rose to 4.4 percent in June. According to Drewry’s Nowcast model, which considers the capacity and duration of container vessel calls at more than 190 ports, the index is anticipated to have fallen 4.1 percent month over month in July to 113.7 points.
The North American Container Port Throughput Index rose 7.9 percent month on month in June to 115 points, a 12.9 percent increase year on year. The rolling 12-month average growth rate expanded to 2.5 percent, having only broken into positive territory last month for the first time since 2022. Volume gains were recorded across the region, with most major ports recording double-digit growth year over year in the second quarter, except for Los Angeles, Manzanillo and Vancouver.
The Greater China Container Port Throughput Index rose to 126 points in June 2024, up 4.6 percent month on month and 6 percent year on year. The 12-month average growth rate in China improved slightly to 5.8 percent. Volume growth for most major ports slowed from the year earlier, except for Shenzhen, where second quarter throughput was up 14 percent year over year.
The Middle East and South Asia Container Port Throughput Index rose 2 percent in June, up just 0.2 percent year over year. This pushed the 12-month rolling average growth rate up to 1.1 percent. Indian ports are driving much of the regional growth, with second quarter volumes up 10 percent YoY at Jawaharlal Nehru and Chennai and 22 percent at Kattupalli and Cochin.
Drewry’s Container Port Throughput Indices are a series of calendar adjusted volume growth/decline indices based on monthly throughput data for more than 340 ports worldwide, representing more than 80 percent of global volumes.
