Northwest Ports TEU Volume Climbs 12%
[ January 31, 2025 // Gary G Burrows ]The Northwest Seaport Alliance of Seattle and Tacoma saw international container volume jump 32.9 percent in November 2024, compared with the year-earlier result.
Container volume (international and domestic) for November reached 290,210 20-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, growing 25.7 percent compared to November 2023. Import container volume increased 24.2 percent to 108,434 TEUs, the ninth consecutive month of growth. Exports increased 24.1 percent to 63,964 TEUs
Year-to-date, volumes are up 12 percent over last year to 3.04 million TEUs, with imports increasing 18.3 percent to 1.17 million TEUs and exports growing 9.6 percent to 571,111 TEUs.
Domestic container volumes declined 1.2 percent compared to year-to-date 2023. Alaska volumes decreased 0.3 percent, and Hawaii volumes decreased 6.2 percent.
The NWSA recently partnered with PTSC on a partial reconfiguration of Terminal 46’s yard to add additional auto storage. The changes added around 750 spots, which brings the total auto capacity to about 7,750 units.
In early February 2024, the auto business launched at Terminal 46 when the NWSA welcomed the GLOVIS vessel Silver Sky. Nearly 19,000 auto units have transited through the facility through November.
Breakbulk volume decreased 12.9 percent to 363,228 tonnes through November. Auto volumes improved 2.3 percent to 312,872 units.
