[ October 27, 2019 // Gary G Burrows ]Alaska Air recently posted impressive 3Q results in its cargo business as the carrier continued to market and sell capacity on its passenger network and optimized freighter service to and within the state of Alaska. The business benefited from a large increases in awareness and utilization of its legacy Virgin America routes by key freight forwarder and global logistics customers during the quarter.
Q3 highlights:
• Only US passenger carrier reporting positive cargo growth this quarter (as of 10/25/2019).
• Cargo revenues for the quarter were up close to 3% compared to the same period last year.
• Utilization of Airbus fleet from Virgin America acquisition continues to build. Volume is up 33% on Airbus fleet operating in the Continental U.S. compared to the same period last year.
• Alaska Air Cargo has the most scheduled freighter ATMs than any other carrier in the state of Alaska and 30% of market share YTD through July in the state.
• As one of the first carriers to offer Self Service Delivery kiosks for cargo customers to help speed up time spent at congested cargo facilities, we launched additional locations in Q3. In total, these kiosks are used over 6,000 times a month in our key cargo markets, saving customers approximately 5 minutes per pickup.
