Box Volume Up 5 percent in October, CTS

[ December 13, 2024   //   ]

Loaded container traffic improved 5 percent year-over-year in October, according to the latest data update from Container Trades Statistics Ltd., or CTS.
CTS records show that global shipments reached 15.8 million 20-foot-eqivalent units, or TEUs in October, a JOC reported. Year-to-date total after 10 months to 152.5 million TEUs, a 6.2 percent increase on the same period last year (see charts).
All regions experienced year-over-year growth in October, but as has been the trend throughout 2024, there was significant variation. For combined imports and exports, Sub Saharan Africa was the fastest growing region in the month, increasing 8.5 percent year-over-year. Conversely, North America headed up the rear with only a 2.2 percent uplift.
North America’s relatively poor showing in October was the result of a 10.2 percent year-over-year decline in container exports, which worked against a 7.9 percent increase for imports. Europe and South Asia and Middle East also saw export deficits in October, though the decreases were only 1.6 percent 1 percent, respectively.
For imports, only Asia experienced a year-over-year decline in October, down 0.2 percent. Three regions reported double-digit growth for the month – Oceania (up 13.2 percent), Europe (12.5 percent) and Latin America (10.2 percent). These areas, consequently, have seen positive changes to spot rates in recent weeks.
CTS is a non-profit, owned by global shipping lines through World Liner Data Ltd., to collect and disseminate TEU listings and pricing data.
