Breadbox Pursues Fleet Renewal, Venture

[ October 4, 2024   //   ]

Breadbox Shipping is pursuing fleet renewal and has entered a new building program, Joris Jan Bakker, CEO and owner, said in a LinkedIn post.
Some of the vessels owned or on long-term time charter by the group were approaching the end of their lifespan, prompting this strategic shift, the company said.
Two vessels under long-term time charter, the 1991 built 4,100-deadweight-ton Falcon and the 1986 built 4,500-dwt Hyrax had been servicing the Breadbox inter-Africa fleet for many years. With their contracts expiring in January and June 2024, respective, the company decided not to renew and redelivered both vessels to their owner.
Earlier in 2024, Breadbox sold its fully owned, 1991 built, 3,200 dwt Xerus. The company has strengthened its strategic partnership with Turkish shipowner Aykop, integrating much of Aykop’s “X-fleet” into Breadbox’s fleet. These vessels, built between 2006 and 2012, will replace the aging tonnage in their fleet, Bakkker said. Additionally, Breadbox sold the 8,000-dwt geared multipurpose vessel Warthog to Aykop only to charter it back for three years.
In addition, Breadbox is entering into a joint venture with Aykop for the construction of four 3,800-dwt coasters at a Chinese shipyard. These vessels, designed to fit the company’s current business model, will be delivered starting late 2025. They will be Tier III compliant, carry an EU Green Passport, and be built under RINA classification. Further project details will be shared at a later stage, Breadbox said.
