Condolences to Families of Missing El Faro Crew
[ October 13, 2015 // Gary G Burrows ]FBJNA extends its deepest condolences to the families and friends of the missing crew of the cargo ship El Faro.
El Faro sank off the Bahamas last week after setting out from Jacksonville and sailing into the path of Hurricane Joaquin, a ferocious storm with high seas whipped up by winds of 130 miles per hour.
After an exhaustive air and sea search for possible survivors by the US Coast Guard, the search was called off on October 7. Thirty-three people were aboard the El Faro; 28 U.S. crew members and five Polish contractors.
The ship’s owners, Tote Maritime Puerto Rico, believe the ship sank last on October 1 after suffering engine failure during its weekly run from Jacksonville to San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board will continue searching for the wreckage of El Faro.
