Corpus Christi Tugs, Rail to Go Green
[ November 7, 2024 // Gary G Burrows ]The Port of Corpus Christi Authority said it will receive US$105 million through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Ports Program to deploy zero-emissions equipment.
The port’s EPA grant will support about 70 percent of the cost of following zero-emission equipment and projects, including: Three tugboats, one for each of the tug companies operating in the port; eight electric forklifts; one sweeper truck; a shore-power retrofit package for an existing dock; repowering of two locomotives; seven charging stations; pre- and post-project emissions inventories; and community outreach and engagement and workforce training for operation of the new equipment.
The roughly 30 percent non-federal match will be shared by port authority and owners/operators of the new equipment: Bay Houston Towing Co., Signet Maritime Corp., Suderman & Young Towing Co., and Watco.
The port authority said the projects would result in annual reduction of: 186 tons of Nox; Three tons of particulate matter 2.5 microns or less in diameter (conferring annual health benefits equivalent to $790,000); 650 tons of CO2; and 800,000 gallons of diesel fuel consumption.
