Drewry’s World Container Index Dips 3%
[ February 7, 2025 // Gary G Burrows ]Drewry, the maritime research and consultancy, said its World Container Index decreased 3 percent to USUS$3,273 per 40-foot equivalent unit, or FEU, the week of Feb. 6.
The latest Drewry WCI composite index is 68 percent below the previous pandemic peak of USUS$10,377 in September 2021 but was 130 percent higher than the average 2019 (pre-pandemic) rate of USUS$1,420.
The average composite index for the year-to-date is USUS$3,638 per FEU, which is USUS$760 higher than the 10-year average rate of USUS$2,871 (inflated by the exceptional 2020-22 Covid period).
Freight rates for Rotterdam to New York decreased 10 percent or US$263 to US$2,469 per 40-footer, while rates from Los Angeles to Shanghai slipped 2 percent to $707 per 40-footer. New York to Rotterdam, Shanghai to Los Angeles and Shanghai to New York fell 1 percent to US$833, US$4,717 and US$6,212, respectively.
Drewry said it expects spot rates to decrease slightly in the coming week to due the increase in capacity.
