Drewry’s World Container Index Falls 4%
[ April 3, 2025 // Gary Burrows ]Drewry, the maritime research and consultancy, said its World Container Index decreased 4 percent to USUS$2,168 per 40-foot equivalent unit, or FEU, the week of March 25.
The latest Drewry WCI composite index is 79 percent below the previous pandemic peak of USUS$10,377 in September 2021 but was 53 percent higher than the average 2019 (pre-pandemic) rate of USUS$1,420.
The average composite index for the year-to-date is USUS$3,053 per FEU, which is USUS$167 higher than the 10-year average rate of USUS$2,886 (inflated by the exceptional 2020-22 Covid period).
Freight rates for Rotterdam to New York decreased 7 percent to US$2,162 per 40-footer, while rates from Los Angeles to Shanghai slipped 1 percent to $709 per 40-footer. New York to Rotterdam remained stable, Shanghai to Los Angeles fell 6 percent to US$2,487 per FEU and Shanghai to New York fell 4 percent to US$2,370.
Drewry said it expects spot rates to decrease slightly in the coming week.
