Drewry’s World Container Index Rises 3%
[ April 11, 2025 // Gary Burrows ]Drewry, the maritime research and consultancy, said its World Container Index rose 3 percent to USUS$2,265 per 40-foot equivalent unit, or FEU, the week of April 10.
The latest Drewry WCI composite index is 78 percent below the previous pandemic peak of USUS$10,377 in September 2021 but was 59 percent higher than the average 2019 (pre-pandemic) rate of USUS$1,420.
The average composite index for the year-to-date is USUS$2,944 per FEU, which is USUS$55 higher than the 10-year average rate of USUS$2,889 (inflated by the exceptional 2020-22 Covid period).
Freight rates from Shanghai to Los Angeles rose 3 percent or US$89 to US$2,815 per FEU, while rates from Shanghai to New York improved 2 percent to US$3,976 per FEU. Rates from Rotterdam to New York increased 1 percent to US$2,153 per FEU, while rates from New York to Rotterdam decreased 1 percent to US$824 per FEU. Meanwhile, rates from Los Angeles to Shanghai remained stable. Drewry expects rates to increase in the coming weeks due to tariffs and reduced capacity.
