FMC Commissioner Carl Bentzel Resigns
[ November 22, 2024 // Gary G Burrows ]Carl W. Bentzel has resigned as U.S. Federal Maritime Commissioner and will instead serve as president of the National Association of Waterfront Employees, or NAWE, and executive director of the National Maritime Safety Association, or NMSA.
Bentzel was nominated to the FMC by President Trump on June 12, 2012, for a term expiring June 30, 2024. He was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Nov. 21, 2019, and took office Dec. 9, 2019.
Bentzel served as one of the principals in crafting the Maritime Security Act of 1996, the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 1998, and in 2002, after the 9/11 attacks, the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002.
Prior to joining the commission, he had established a consulting services company representing clients on regulatory and legislative issues with transportation, energy and other areas of federal regulatory oversight. From 2004 to 2014 Bentzel was vice president and head of the federal advocacy division of the public relations firm DCI Group. Previously, Bentzel served 10 years as a Senate professional committee staffer including senior democratic counsel of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science & Transportation.
