Minimum wage to rise to £11 44 per hour

If the highest federal minimum wage is increased in excess of the State minimum wage in effect, then the State minimum wage will increase to the same amount, effective on the same date as the increase in the federal minimum wage. Any work in excess of eight hours in one workday, in excess of 40 hours in one workweek, or in the first eight hours worked on the seventh day of work in any one workweek shall be at the rate of one and one-half times the regular rate of pay. Any work in excess of 12 hours in one day or in excess of eight hours on any seventh day of a workweek shall be paid no less than twice the regular rate of pay. Exceptions apply to an employee working pursuant to an alternative workweek adopted pursuant to applicable Labor Code sections and for time spent commuting. A full-time student working for a university, retail store, or service establishment cannot be paid less than 85% of the minimum wage. Although students may work up to eight hours per day, they cannot work more than 20 hours per week when school is in session.

Arguments for a $15 Minimum Wage

In the table below, only the lowest minimum wage is cited, or the highest-level subdivision where it applies. If a higher minimum wage increases the wage rates of unskilled workers above the level that would be established by market forces, the quantity of unskilled workers employed will fall. Additionally, some local governments set minimum wage rates higher than their respective state minimum wage. Users are encouraged to consult the laws of particular States in determining whether the State’s minimum wage applies to a particular employment. This information often may be found at the websites maintained by State labor departments. In summer 2023, 19 states and localities implemented minimum wage increases based on state, local, or municipal laws that already set the minimum wage higher than the federal standard.

An employee earning a guaranteed monthly compensation of $2,000 or more is exempt from the State minimum wage and overtime law. Certain categories of workers have often been exempt from being covered by minimum-wage laws. The owner, the employees, and the buying public are all one and the same, and unless an industry can so manage itself as to keep wages high and prices low it destroys itself, for otherwise it limits the number of its customers.
