Montreal Port CEO Looks Backward, Ahead

[ January 24, 2024   //   ]

Kicking off 2024, the Montreal Port Authority’s lead looked back at development on projects in 2023, and a look towards the Canadian port’s future.

Geneviève Deschamps, interim president and CEO, appointed in August, detailed a few projects in the port’s recent in-house publication, Logbook. Meanwhile, the port’s efforts towards its Contrecoeur expansion project.

Canadian Transport Minister Pablo Rodriquez announced an allocation of US$150 million from Canada’s National Trade Corridors Fund, a major funding step. The long-planned project will create 1.15 million 20-foot-equivalent units of container capacity, a 60 percent increase in container capacity, with two berths, an intermodal marshalling yard connected to the main rail network, a truck gate connected to the road network, and secondary facilities for port activities.

Also impacting the cargo side of port business was completion of the overpass in the Viau Terminal sector, developed to optimize truck flow and reduce its impact on the local road network.

The U.S. $47.8 million project created an overpass spanning Notre Dame Street to connect directly to Assomption Boulevard, improving road accessibility to the port and alleviating trucking, by creating a direct link between the Port of Montreal and the highway.

This project included architectural integration, an artistic component from the Guido Molinari Foundation, and landscaping.

“With the community around us at heart, we have built these projects with sustainable components and integration into the urban landscape. For example, you’ll find an artistic concept inspired by the work of painter Guido Molinari and architectural sails on the overpass.

The Port of Montreal Tower was also completed in 2023. It called for rehabilitating the former Alexandra Pier to meet the operational needs of shipping lines and cruise passengers. It includes new public spaces on the waterfront and a cruise terminal featuring contemporary architecture, and an observation tower offering a view of the city.
