POV’s Cargo is Flowing; Rail, RMT Volume Continue to Grow

The Port of Virginia® handled 220,000 TEUs in September and that volume helped to push solid growth in rail cargo and in containers moved to Richmond Marine Terminal by barge.

In comparison with last September, TEU volumes are up 2%; rail units up 16% and volume at Richmond Marine Terminal (RMT) is up 55%. Moreover, September marks the eighth consecutive month of TEU volumes exceeding 210,000 units.

“The peak-season cargo flow is steady – import TEUs were up 7% — and we are maintaining our consistency in delivery of service, said John F. Reinhart, CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority. “Our productivity across the operation continues to trend in positive territory.

“We were well-prepared for the eventualities brought by Hurricane Matthew. Our operations team collaborated closely with our labor partners and the US Coast Guard to minimize the service disruption and we tailored our operations to ensure that we were productive and safe.”

Year-to-date, the port’s TEU volume is up 2%; rail units up 12%; Virginia Inland Port volume up 6%; and Richmond Marine Terminal volume, up 30%.
